Tipping is not a natural part of many Western cultures and many of us feel uncomfortable, or unsure, about when, or how much, to tip. However, in the places you will visit, tipping makes up a significant part of many people's wages so it's important that we get it right. For this reason we've developed a very simple system to take all the hassle out of tipping. With our 'tipping made easy' policy, a nominal pre-determined amount is collected from all group tour participants to cover tips en route. This then saves you the hassle of when and how much to tip bellhops, luggage handlers, local guides and other support staff through the tour. Our 'tipping made easy' doesn't include a tip to your group tour leader. Naturally, though, the amount is up to you as tipping is an entirely personal gesture.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Cairo

Tuesday. Welcome to Egypt! On arrival at the airport you’ll be transferred to our hotel to spend the rest of today exploring Cairo at leisure.

Overnight: Cairo

Day 2 - Alexandria sightseeing

Cairo - Alexandria. Discover the port city of Alexandria today as we drive to the Mediterranean coast. We’ll explore the ancient Roman catacombs, the largest of its kind in Egypt. The catacombs were only rediscovered in 1900, when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft. Our tour will also visit Pompey’s Pillar and the impressive Library of Alexandria (exterior) before we arrive at the Citadel of Qaitbay. This fortress was built on the site of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in 1323AD and some of the same stones recovered from the ruins were used in the construction of this famous citadel.

Overnight: Alexandria
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3 - El Alamein

Alexandria - Cairo. Today we visit the sobering Commonwealth War Graves of El Alamein. Two bloody battles were fought here during the Second World War, which eventually saw the Allied forces defeat the Axis powers. This victory eliminated the threat to Egypt and the strategically important Suez Canal. Around 13,000 Allied soldiers were killed in battle. We’ll pay our respects to the fallen soldiers and explore the El Alamein Military Museum to learn more about the battles fought here. The museum also houses original war vehicles, weapons and uniforms. After the visit, we return to Cairo.

Overnight: Cairo
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4 - Free Time in Cairo

Today is free to explore Egypt’s capital as you please. You may wish to join our morning Backstreets of Cairo tour, which will take you to some of the lesser known sights in the city. Visit the hub of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution in Tahrir Square, wander down El Moez Street and explore the famous cave church of St Simon.

Overnight: Cairo
Meals: Breakfast

Day 5 - Pyramids of Giza & Saqqara

Today we explore Egypt’s most famous attraction, with a visit to the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. The only surviving of the Ancient Wonders of the World, the pyramids are also the oldest. Gaze in awe at the colossal structures - the largest of the pyramids, Cheops, was the tallest man-made building on Earth for 3,800 years. After our tour we continue to the necropolis of Saqqara to see the famous stepped Pyramid of Zhoser, which dates back to 2700BC. A visit to a government supervised Papyrus Museum will also be made at some point during today.

Overnight: Cairo
Meals: Breakfast

Day 6 - Grand Egyptian Museum

Cairo - Aswan. On today’s excursion, we visit the Grand Egyptian Museum. This extraordinary 490,000 sq.m complex is just 2km from the pyramids and houses over 100,000 artefacts from ancient Egypt’s diverse history. Many of the exhibits have never been on public display before, and artefacts have been brought together from across Egypt and the rest of the world. The museum will eventually showcase a giant exhibition dedicated to the treasures of King Tutankhamun.

After our guided tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum, we head over to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which continues to house a vast collection of statues, jewellery, and sarcophagi. Among its treasures are several remarkably well-preserved mummies, including those of Yuya and Thuyu, high-ranking nobles and the great-grandparents of King Tutankhamun. These mummies are so well-preserved that they still have thick locks of hair, visible fingernails, and smooth, blackened skin. Then there's time to relax back at the hotel before we board the night train to Aswan this evening.

Overnight: Sleeper Train
Meals: Breakfast

Day 7 - Aswan & Philae Temple

We arrive in Aswan this morning and visit the beautiful Philae Temple. We’ll take a boat out into the Nile and sail to Agilkia Island to explore the site. The temple was carefully relocated from its original location to Agilkia in the 1960s, as part of a UNESCO project to save it from rising water levels after the flooding of Lake Nasser. Our final stop today is a perfume oil emporium and this evening is free to explore Aswan at leisure - perhaps check out the vibrant market.

Overnight: Aswan
Meals: Breakfast

Day 8 - Optional Abu Simbel & Felucca Sailing

Aswan - Nile felucca cruise. This morning there’s an optional trip to Abu Simbel, the famous temple built by Ramses II and guarded by 4 colossal statues of the pharaoh himself. Later, we board our traditional felucca for a 2 night cruise down the mighty Nile. If sailing by felucca is not your style, consider upgrading to a 5 star luxury Nile Cruise, please see the tab above for prices. For more information about Nile Cruising please click here.

Overnight: Felucca Cruise
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9 - Felucca Sailing & Kom Ombo

Nile felucca cruise - Kom Ombo. Relax onboard the felucca as it makes its way downriver. This afternoon we’ll dock near Kom Ombo and visit the famous symmetrical temple, dedicated to the falcon god Horus and the crocodile god Sobek. We then return to the felucca for our final night onboard.

Overnight: Felucca Cruise
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10 - Luxor

Kom Ombo - Luxor. Disembark the felucca today as we drive to Luxor, where the rest of the day can be spent at leisure. This evening, there’s an optional excursion to Luxor Temple, which is beautifully illuminated by hundreds of lights at night.

Overnight: Luxor
Meals: Breakfast

Day 11 - Valley of the Kings

Luxor - Cairo. Enter the lavishly decorated tombs of famous pharaohs today as we visit the Valley of the Kings. Gaze at the towering Colossi of Memnon and explore the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut - Egypt’s second female pharaoh.

Later, discover the majestic Karnak Temple, one of the largest religious buildings in the world. The temple took 1,500 years to complete and features contributions from around 30 different pharaohs. Marvel at the giant columns of Hypostyle Hall before we return to Cairo on the night train this evening.

Overnight: Sleeper Train
Meals: Breakfast

Day 12 - Free Time in Cairo

We arrive back in Cairo where today is free for you to relax or explore Egypt’s capital at leisure. You can opt to visit Khan el Khalili bazaar, the ideal place for some last minute souvenir shopping.

Overnight: Cairo
Meals: Breakfast

Day 13 - Cairo

Tour Reviews

We had a fantastic trip - everything was so well organised and our tour leader was informative and entertaining.

I have recently returned from a wonderful fortnight in Egypt. This took in the ancient port city of Alexandria, the war cemeteries and sites of El Alamein, and then carried on from the hustling capital city of Cairo to all the impressive monuments and temples that Egypt is famed for. The tour was made even better by the organisation that OTG provided, both at home, and also in Egypt. From the time I was met at Cairo airport by a representative, to the time I left, the whole tour ran like clockwork. We had three guides in Egypt. Shariff, who took us around Alex and El Alamein; Alam who guided us on the optional excursion around the 'Back Streets of Cairo', and finally Nader who accompanied us for the remainder of the tour. All three without exception were brilliant. Very easy to approach and converse with, fun and full of anecdotes about their country, and of life in Egypt generally. They are clearly all very proud to represent their country, and all should take groups for OTG around Egypt in the future. The trip was held together by Amr, the local rep who did all the behind the scenes work and admin. Again, nothing was too much trouble for him. The transport and drivers we had were also very good. The drivers were prompt and efficient, and the buses were clean, comfortable and very spacious. I enjoyed the felucca trip up the Nile, although the bathroom facilities were rather limited. That aside, the crew were very polite and efficient, and the chef cooked up some excellent meals for us! Possibly the only transport I wasn't so taken by was the overnight sleeper train service, particularly the journey from Cairo to Aswan. I didn't find it very comfortable, and spent most of the night awake! However, this is only a minor 'grumble', and I didn't let it detract from what was otherwise a first rate holiday. I personally had a terrific time, and would definitely recommend On The Go, and this tour, if anyone is thinking of visiting Egypt soon.

This was an awesome Egypt trip! But hands down the best part of the trip was our tour guide Mohamed aka (MOMO). He was full of information and brought it to life time after time. He also was very attentive to all of our needs. I felt very safe in Egypt and I highly recommend this destination.. I’m a huge traveler and this trip met all my expectations.. Momo thanks again for all the good times and history you shared. It was a very memorable trip for Frank and I. Much happiness, love and success your way. Christina

Momo our tour guide from On the go tours was amazingly insightful and knew what he was talking about, almost everyone I know said PLEASE don't have your honeymoon in Egypt it isn't safe, I'm glade we didn't listen. We felt safe 100% of the time in Egypt. The people are beautiful, all of them, cheeky, full of smiles, fun and kind. What can I say about sight seeing, well I've ticked off most of my childhood dreams with the trust and guidance of "On The Go Tours" cant wait to come back and do a solo trip and get all the good vibes again

The tour was true to its name 'On The Go'. Lots to see and do and plenty of R&R in between. Wonderful sights and great company too.Made some amazing friends. Our tour guide was the best,so knowledgeable, considerate and very passionate about his country. One in a million in my opinion. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone one who loves adventure steeped in history. This is a tour that shows you insight into the Egypt way of life, past and present. Thank you to all the team at 'On The Go' for making this trip so amazing. I will be back.
